A Warm Welcome The summer season is just starting, but the winter here in Aldbrough has not been too cold. The storms & snow that seemed to affect other parts of the country seemed to blow over us.
The weather is now suitable for getting out the bikes almost every day, but ride carefully! On a recent ride out to Lincolnshire 5 friends were hurt in a motorcycle pile-up and one has unfortunately lost a leg. The pond is warming up and now is host to a variety of fish—watch out for Mercury & Mars our latest Koi. We’ve installed a filter unit to help control the algae alongside the waterlily and other water plants. Wentworth House’s History Pt3 We’ve continued with our quest to discover the past at Wentworth. The Estate up until the 1960’s consisted of a three acre plot bounded by Seaside, Nottingham and Headlands Road. Largely woodland at the back and to the Western side stables and the Gardeners Cottage. The rear 1.5 acres were converted to sheltered accommodation in the 1960’s. The remaining 1.5 acre’s were split in half. Half remaining with Wentworth House and the remainder being allocated to the Gardeners Cottage ( Kilimar Cottage) and a new building ‘Byways’. In 1892 the House was occupied by a Mr John Hairsine.
At the turn of the Century the House was occupied by Walter Sizer, son of Richard Sizer a Hull based oil processor (vegetable oils) who apparently invented the first cattle cake Machine.
New Developments New products has been the driving force behind the latest batch of changes here at the Wentworth. We have gained our civil ceremony license, which means people can get married, named, become British citizens, or re-affirm their vows here at the Hotel. We have introduced cream teas and crab sandwiches on sunny weekends. These can be eaten inside the Hotel or at the front overlooking seaside road or in the beer garden at the rear. We have improved our accessibility for disabled visitors, by providing a ramp for the steps from the car park. Room 2 can now hold up to 5 people. In addition to the double bed, we have put a double sofa bed in the lounge area. We have also created an eighth bedroom (logically numbered room 1!). This is a downstairs twin bedded room with a sofa bed that can hold up to 4 people. It is ideal for people who have problems with stairs, although the toilet facilities do not meet strict disabled requirements.
We have purchased the Gardeners cottage next door, so once again it has become part of the Wentworth estate. We will be merging the frontages together to provide level pedestrian access to the front door. Also the garden to the property (which has hints of Hidecote) will become open to guests to meander through. We have been trying to source our breakfast products locally and whilst the eggs, bacon, sausage and jams are local we have a problem getting local baked beans and tomatoes during the winter. Our jams/chutneys / and marmalades are made near Ripon and are for sale in the Breakfast room. Village Life Aldbrough is served by a number of bus services. The 220 links the village to Hull & Hornsea. The erratic service basically will get you to Hull in the mornings and Hornsea in the afternoons, but there is no service in the evening. The 129 service links Aldbrough to Hornsea and Withernsea every couple of hours until 4:00pm. The Aldbrough show takes place on the 19th July, when locals are judged on the prowess in the creation of cakes, vegetables, flowers, gardens and craft items!
Meet the guests In March the Bridlington open attracted intrepid Sea anglers from around the country. The lure of a few thousand pounds tempted over 1000 anglers to participate. Unfortunately the weather conditions on the Saturday were atrocious, a north easterly gale mixed with snow meant the sea was almost un-fishable. On Sunday the weather had changed and with a bit of sun was almost pleasant.
BJ Services have spent some time with us, especially Alex Wood. Strangely when he was enjoying a pint in the George one evening a call came in asking for Alex wood and it was past one to another Alex Wood (in this case Alexandra the Yorkshire post correspondent for Holderness, what a coincidence! Alex and Ken a colleague found some fabulous fossils on the beach, not least an Ammonite and some Gryphea preserved in pyrites, very unusual and very pretty. Ron & Paul Bradley have also become regulars. They specialise in building and maintaining Chicken farms and there are plenty of those in Holderness. John Drayton has engraved his name on one of the settees and has a permanent booking for Emmerdale.
The hotel hosted the guests for two weddings in June. Guy & Lindsey and Andy & Georgina
